How do I find out whether the insurance covers me?
On the day of the event, you (as the claimant) will receive information on the amount of precipitation measured every hour afterwards by e-mail during the insured period.
Within two working days after the event, you will receive a summary of the measured rainfall amounts and information on the payment of your lump sum compensation in the event of a claim.
Who measures the rainfall?
The amount of rainfall at the insured location of the festival is calculated by UBIMET GmbH using a scientifically recognised meteorological method (RACE weather model). The calculation is based on measurement data from physical weather stations as well as a dense and worldwide network of weather radar and weather satellite data.
Please note that the calculated values may deviate from the importance of other weather services and/or physical measuring stations due to the determination procedure and microclimatic conditions. Only the values of the weather data report of UBIMET GmbH apply for the fixed weather insurance benefit.
How much is 7.5 mm of rain?
- Normal rain has an intensity of around 1-1.5mm/hour,
- a medium-heavy rain shower has an intensity of around 3.0 mm/hour,
- heavy rain around 5.0 mm/hour
- or a downpour 5.0 mm/5 min.
In a heavy storm, the amount of rain can increase to 20 mm/hour and more. Such a precipitation amount is basically caused by normal continuous rain or short heavy showers, but not by drip or drizzle.
How is the amount of rain measured?
UBIMET calculates the weather data with its own high-resolution weather model RACE (Refined Atmospheric Condition Evolution). In several data centres worldwide (New York, Melbourne and Vienna) the RACE weather models are fed hourly with the latest weather data (precipitation radar, VERA analyses, lightning, satellite data, aircraft altitude profiles). On the following UBIMET websites, you will find additional information on the weather data used and the RACE weather model.
Please note that the weather you perceive may differ from the weather data report due to microclimatic conditions.

FAQs
Can I insure my private party?
Unfortunately, we do not currently insure private events or celebrations. For weddings we offer our own wedding weather insurance.
Can I still withdraw from the contract if I have already paid the premium? Will I get my money back?
No, due to the short duration of the contract, there is no legal right of withdrawal. Once you have paid the premium, you can no longer withdraw from the contract. On the other hand, there is also no possibility for us to cancel once the contract is up and running.
What happens if I do not pay the premium on time?
The insurance premium must be paid no later than the 21st day before the insured event. Please refer to your quotation for detailed information on payment deadlines. Unfortunately, we can no longer insure the event if payment is made too late. Late payments will be refunded by us. If the single premium is not transferred, no contract is concluded.
What does the event weather insurance cost? What is the premium made up of?
The premium depends on the date and location of the event (and the historical weather conditions derived from this) as well as the lump sum compensation selected. After you have submitted the enquiry form (download on our homepage or enquiry via the contact form on our homepage) to us, you will immediately receive a non-binding offer for you by e-mail.
The fixed weather insurance is available from a premium of € 179.
Why is there an event weather insurance? Why do I need it?
Especially at outdoor events, the weather plays a decisive role and has a direct impact on visitor numbers. Organisers are almost powerless against this. With the event weather insurance, we compensate you at a lump sum for lost sales, low visitor numbers or additional costs due to rainy weather on the day of your event. In the event of an insured event, you receive a lump sum compensation of up to € 10,000.
Under which conditions is the insurance cover for the event valid?
You can take out event weather insurance up to 4 weeks (28 days) before the event at the latest.
Insurance cover only comes into effect upon timely and full payment of the single premium. Please refer to your quotation for the due date of the premium. Unfortunately, we can no longer insure the event if payment is made too late. Late payments will be refunded by us. If the single premium is not transferred, no contract is concluded.
How does it work if my event lasts several days?
The insurance can only be taken out for one day at a time. If you wish to insure several days, a separate insurance policy is required for each day of the event.
Attention: As already mentioned, the total costs of the event are required for the calculation of the premium. For events lasting several days, the total costs of the event are calculated separately on a pro-rata basis for the respective insured day.
An example: Let's assume your event lasts 3 days and the total costs (all purchased services, pro-rata acquisition costs and use of goods on commission) amount to € 21,000. You now want to insure the first two days of the event. What do you have to do? These two days each account for 40% of the total costs.
To do this, you make a separate application for each of the two days and specify the total costs as follows:
total costs lump sum day 1 40% or EUR 8.400 EUR 2.500 day 2 40% or EUR 8.400 EUR 2.500 day 3 20% or EUR 4.200 EUR 1.250 Who can take out event weather insurance and where is it valid?
Only organisers with club or company headquarters in Austria and Germany can take out the event weather insurance. In the event of a claim, payment can only be made to an Austrian or German account. We do not insure private events or celebrations.
In principle, we insure events that take place in Austria or Germany. If you want to organise a party in another country, we have to check the circumstances individually. Please contact us by e-mail at kundenservice@lamie-direkt.at or call us on +43 732 2596.
What is UBIMET GmbH and the RACE WETTER MODEL?
UBIMET operates its own high-resolution weather model RACE (Refined Atmospheric Condition Evolution). In several data centres worldwide (New York, Melbourne and Vienna), the RACE weather models are fed hourly with the latest weather data (precipitation radar, VERA analyses, lightning, satellite data, aircraft altitude profiles) to further refine the forecasts. Highly complex data assimilation (3dVar) and nudging techniques (LHN) are used for this purpose.
With additional downscaling algorithms based on the most accurate geodata, UBIMET subsequently achieves model resolutions of a few metres. UBIMET is thus in a position to produce highly precise forecasts worldwide, both spatially and temporally, tailored to a wide range of industries. In its own model development department, UBIMET's experts ensure a successive increase in precision through ongoing evaluations and further developments. Leading global weather models such as ECMWF or GFS and specially developed Model Output Statistics procedures are also used in a multi-model approach at UBIMET.
On the following UBIMET websites, you will find additional information on used weather data and weather models.
What is meant by a rainfall of 7.5 mm? How is this measured?
The insurance covers a rainfall of 7.5 mm or more, i.e. 7.5 litres / square metre, which falls in the period from 12.00 to 18.00 hrs.
- Normal rain has an intensity of around 1-1.5 mm/hour,
- a medium-heavy rain shower has an intensity of around 3.0 mm/hour,
- heavy rain by 5.0 mm/hour
- or a downpour 5.0 mm/5 min.
- During a severe storm, the amount of rain can increase to 20 mm/hour and more.
Such a precipitation amount is basically caused by continuous rain or short heavy showers, but not by drips or drizzles.
The amount of rainfall at the insured event location is measured by UBIMET GmbH using a scientifically recognised meteorological method (RACE weather model). The basis for the calculation is exclusively the measurement data of physical weather stations as well as weather radar and weather satellite data of UBIMET GmbH.
How do I calculate the total cost of the event?
These correspond to the budgeted total costs of all purchased services (e.g. rent for tent, DJ, band, security, sanitary facilities, etc.), official levies as well as official security measures (e.g. rescue, police); personnel costs; costs for the use of goods (on commission) as well as proportional acquisition costs. For events lasting several days, the total costs of the event for the respective day shall be calculated separately.
An example for calculating the total costs: An Austrian beverage company organises an annual summer party on the company's own premises for employees, family and friends. The following things are needed for this:
- 1 large tent (rent: € 1,900)
- 4 food and beverage stands (total rent: 2,000 €)
- Catering incl. use of goods for 400 people (6,000 €)
- DJ (1.500 €)
- Proportionate acquisition costs for company-owned bar tables and benches (acquisition costs 10,000 €, useful life 10 years, proportionate costs (depreciation): 1,000 €)
- Other infrastructure, decorations and marketing (1,000 €)
- Organiser's liability insurance (100 €)
- Security, waste disposal and cleaning (1,000 €)
The total cost of the fixed weather insurance application is € 14,500. Thus, the lump sum compensation amounts to EUR 3.750€.
How is the lump sum compensation calculated?
The lump sum compensation makes up about a quarter of the total costs of the event and is calculated as follows:
Total costs Lump sum compensation to 3.000 € not insurable 3.001 – 5 000 € 1.250 € 5.001 – 7 000 € 2.000 € 7.001 – 10.000 € 2.500 € 10.001 – 12.500 € 3.125 € 12.501 – 15.000 € 3.750 € 15.001 – 17.500 € 4.375 € 17.501 – 20.000 € 5.000 € 20.001 – 22.500 € 5.625 € 22.501 – 25.000 € 6.250 € 25.001 – 27.500 € 6.875 € 27.501 – 30.000 € 7.500 € 30.001 – 32.500 € 8.125 € 32.501 – 35.000 € 8.750 € 35.001 – 37.500 € 9.375 € 37.501 – 40.000 € 10.000 € >40.000 on request Adequacy of the sum insured
Please note that the lump sum compensation is always dependent on the total costs of the event. Please find in the table the lump sum indemnity available for the respective total costs.
Please note that if, on the other hand, higher total costs are insured than the actual total costs of the event (over-insurance), you will only receive the lump sum compensation to which you would be entitled according to the actual total costs.
However, it is possible to insure only a part of the actual total costs; in this case, only the corresponding lump sum compensation for the lower total costs chosen by you is available.
Example: if the actual total costs of the event are 20,000 € (insured sum 5,000 €) but 30,000 € (insured sum 7,500 €) are insured, only an insured sum of 5,000 € will be paid out in the event of a claim. For events with total costs of more than € 40,000, we will be happy to provide you with an individual offer. Please contact us for this by e-mail to kundenservice@lamie-direkt.at or call us under +43 732 2596.
