In the case of fixed-term contracts, the term of the contract usually depends on whether and when you can terminate your old insurance.
There is usually an automatic extension for contracts with a short term (less than 3 years) (e.g. household or motor vehicle liability insurance). This means that they are automatically extended for another contract year if the customer does not cancel in good time before the end of the contract. But don’t worry, your insurer must inform you in good time about the possibility of cancellation.
For insurance contracts with a contract term of more than 3 years (up to 10 years can be agreed), there is a special right of termination for consumers, after which you can terminate a contract at least after 3 years (i.e. at the end of the 3rd year).
Regardless of the contract term, there are other termination options, e.g. if you change residence or in the event of a claim.
